St. John’s (Antigua), Nov 13 (NationPress) The West Indies have officially revealed their ODI squad for the upcoming three-match series against New Zealand, beginning on November 16. Notably, John Campbell makes a comeback after a six-year hiatus, while Brandon King, who struggled in the recent T20I series, has been omitted.
Campbell replaces Brandon King, who was an opener during the Bangladesh series. King managed scores of 44, 0, and 18 in the series, which the West Indies lost 2-1. His recent T20I performances have also been disappointing, with four scores below ten in his last five matches against Bangladesh and New Zealand.
Campbell earned his recall due to his impressive displays in red-ball cricket, highlighted by a century in the second Test against India in Delhi last month. He also topped the run-scoring charts for Jamaica in the Super50 Cup last season, amassing 278 runs in seven matches with a strike rate of 102.20. Notably, none of the top ten run-scorers in that tournament had a higher scoring pace.
Pacer Johann Layne and seam-bowling allrounder Shamar Springer have received their first ODI call-ups.
Layne's selection follows his Test debut during last month's tour of India. Although he has made a mark in red-ball cricket, he has only played 12 List-A matches and claimed 13 wickets in that format. Against New Zealand, Layne will bolster the seam attack alongside Jayden Seales and Romario Shepherd, in addition to Springer, Forde, and Justin Greaves.
Matthew Forde, who performed well in the recent five-match T20I series against the Kiwis, has been recalled.
Akeal Hosein and Gudakesh Motie, along with the injured left-arm quick Ramon Simmonds, have been replaced from the squad that faced Bangladesh last month. Additionally, Alzarri Joseph, Shamar Joseph, and Jediah Blades were sidelined due to injuries.
Ackeem Auguste, who earned his ODI cap in Bangladesh, remains in the 15-member squad captained by Shai Hope, along with Keacy Carty and Alick Athanaze.
