London, March 10 (NationPress) Hollywood actor Pierce Brosnan stated that it is a given that the upcoming James Bond should be British.
His remarks followed concerns about the franchise's British identity following the acquisition by Amazon MGM Studios, as reported by mirror.co.uk.
In an interview with the Sunday Telegraph, the former 007 expressed his belief that it was the correct choice for the franchise's long-time producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson to grant creative control to Amazon.
“It requires significant courage to relinquish control,” Brosnan noted.
“I anticipated this change for some time but believe it was the right move for Barbara and Michael. I trust that Amazon will treat the work and the character with dignity, imagination, and respect.
In February, the US film and television production and distribution company announced that it would co-own the franchise alongside Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, who have collaborated on the Bond films since Brosnan's initial entry in 1995’s GoldenEye.
The 71-year-old actor, who portrayed Bond in four films, remarked that “no one truly knows” what the future holds for 007 under Amazon’s stewardship.
“In this rapidly changing world, such transitions come with a sense of regret,” he commented.
The interview highlighted Brosnan's assertion that it is a given for Bond to stay British.
He stated: “A significant legacy has been passed down, and I take great pride in having contributed to the history and legacy of Bond and the films I created with Barbara and Michael.”
“We revitalized the franchise after it had been inactive for six years; GoldenEye was such a triumph that it thrived and grew stronger... I wish them all the best.”
Among the top contenders for the role are British-American actor Andrew Garfield, as well as Oscar Isaac and Chilean-American Pedro Pascal.
British actors James Norton, known for Happy Valley, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson, recognized for Kick-Ass and Kraven the Hunter, are also names being discussed for the role to succeed Daniel Craig.
Craig's last film, No Time To Die, premiered in September 2021, and in June 2022, Bond producer Barbara Broccoli stated that the next Bond film is far from commencing.
