BRS MLCs Face One-Day Suspension in Telangana Council
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Hyderabad, March 30 (NationPress) In the Telangana Legislative Council, all members of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) faced a one-day suspension on Monday due to their disruption of the House proceedings, as they called for the removal of the revenue minister over accusations of corruption and illegal mining.
During the session, the Council Chairman, G. Sukhender Reddy, suspended all 11 BRS MLCs present, including the Leader of the Opposition, Madhusudhana Chary, following a motion initiated by Legislative Affairs Minister, D. Sridhar Babu.
The BRS members insisted on the ousting of Revenue Minister, P. Srinivasa Reddy, as well as the establishment of a House Committee or an inquiry led by a sitting High Court judge concerning the claims of illegal mining tied to Raghava Constructions, a firm purportedly associated with the minister.
Members of the Opposition, brandishing placards, encircled the podium, vocally supporting their demands.
Minister Sridhar Babu reassured the House that Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy had already announced a CB CID investigation into the alleged illegal mining that has reportedly been ongoing since 2014. He urged the BRS legislators to facilitate a smoother operation of the House.
Repeatedly, the Council Chairman requested that BRS members return to their seats in the interest of maintaining order within the House.
Despite the Minister's appeal, the Opposition continued their protest, prompting Sridhar Babu to propose their suspension for one day.
The motion was approved through a voice vote, as announced by Chairman Sukhender Reddy.
Marshals were summoned to escort the suspended MLCs out of the House.
Earlier, BRS MLCs had protested at Gun Park near the Assembly, demanding the dismissal of the revenue minister. They marched to the legislature complex, holding placards and chanting slogans.
On the previous day, BRS MLAs were suspended from the Assembly for two days for similar disruptions regarding this issue.
Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar confirmed the suspension of all 24 BRS members in the Assembly after a motion by Legislative Affairs Minister Sridhar Babu was passed by a voice vote.
The ruling Congress party dismissed the call for a House Committee, arguing that since a CB CID inquiry into the alleged illegal mining has been initiated since 2014, there was no necessity for such a committee.
