24 BRS Legislators Face Two-Day Suspension from Telangana Assembly
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Hyderabad, March 29 (NationPress) In a significant turn of events, 24 MLAs from the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) faced a two-day suspension from the Telangana Assembly due to their disruption of the House's proceedings. Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar declared the suspension after a resolution proposed by Legislative Affairs Minister D. Sridhar Babu was approved through a voice vote.
The BRS members, acting as the main opposition, have been obstructing the Assembly's activities in order to push for a House Committee investigation into allegations of corruption and illegal mining against Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy.
As the Assembly convened, BRS members immediately raised their concerns, demanding the formation of a House Committee. Their request for an adjournment motion was denied by the Speaker.
In protest, BRS legislators occupied the well of the House and shouted slogans, significantly hindering the proceedings.
The ruling Congress party dismissed the need for a House Committee, arguing that the government had already initiated a CB CID inquiry into the alleged illegal mining activities in the state dating back to 2014.
This situation escalated into a heated exchange between members of the BRS and Congress, particularly after remarks made by BRS MLA Kaushik Reddy regarding Kadiyam Srihari provoked strong reactions from the treasury benches.
Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and other ministers criticized the BRS for stalling the House's operations, with the Chief Minister advocating for the suspension of the BRS members. He accused the BRS of attempting to manipulate the situation by demanding a House Committee to exert pressure on the minister involved.
The Chief Minister challenged the BRS members to present any evidence they might have to the CB CID.
Despite repeated calls from the Speaker for cooperation to ensure the smooth operation of the House, the BRS members remained unresponsive, prompting the legislative affairs minister to propose their suspension for two days.
Among those suspended were notable figures such as BRS's deputy leader in the Assembly T. Harish Rao, party working president K.T. Rama Rao, and former ministers T. Srinivas Yadav, Jagdish Reddy, and Gangula Kamalakar.
Following their suspension, the BRS MLAs organized a protest within the Assembly premises, accusing the government of suppressing the opposition's voice.
The Assembly's Budget session is set to conclude on March 31.
