Census 2027: Haryana Director reviews Gurugram preparations, urges speed
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Lalit Jain, Director of Census Operations, Haryana, on Friday, 8 May conducted a detailed review of preparations for Census 2027 operations in Gurugram, directing officials to accelerate field-level work and complete enumeration within the stipulated timeline. The meeting brought together senior district officers, tehsildars, and representatives from Municipal Corporation Gurugram and Municipal Corporation Manesar.
Key Directives from the Review Meeting
Addressing the gathering, Jain stated that house-listing maps and other preliminary groundwork for the Census had already been completed, and that actual field operations must now begin at the earliest. He urged all enumerators and supervisors to report for duty on time, describing the Census as "an extremely important task for nation-building." He also assured that the department stands firmly with employees in carrying out this work.
Deputy Commissioner Uttam Singh reinforced the message, directing officials to initiate Census work without delay and announcing that progress would be reviewed on a weekly basis to ensure timely and effective completion.
Cooperation from Residents and Housing Societies
Jain made a pointed appeal to representatives of Resident Welfare Associations to allow Census personnel entry into their societies and premises and extend full cooperation. He reminded residents that refusing to provide information to Census personnel, furnishing incorrect information, or failing to cooperate with Census work is a punishable offence under the law.
About Census 2027: India's First Digital Census
Census 2027, described as the world's largest census exercise, formally began on 1 April. The Government of India has commenced Phase I — house listing and housing census — marking the beginning of the country's largest administrative and statistical exercise. Notably, this is India's first-ever digital data capture and self-enumeration exercise, representing a significant departure from the paper-based methodology used in all previous counts.
The national enumeration exercise was symbolically initiated by enumerating President Droupadi Murmu through self-enumeration, upholding the tradition of commencing the national count with the First Citizen of India.
Why Timely Completion Matters
With favourable weather conditions currently prevailing, Jain stressed that the window must be utilised to push field operations forward. Census data underpins resource allocation, constituency delimitation, welfare scheme targeting, and infrastructure planning across all tiers of government — making delays in enumeration consequential far beyond administrative timelines. This is the first Census to be conducted after a gap of over 15 years from the last full enumeration, lending added urgency to its completion.
All eyes will now be on whether district-level machinery in Gurugram can sustain the pace set by the review, with weekly monitoring by the Deputy Commissioner expected to keep operations on track.
