Priyanka Chaturvedi Condemns Government for Sonam Wangchuk’s Detention: Calls for Attention to Leh-Ladakh Issues
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 18 (NationPress) Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi has expressed strong disapproval regarding the government's decision to detain Ladakhi innovator and climate activist Sonam Wangchuk under the National Security Act (NSA). She labeled the case against him as “shameful” and implored the government to heed his calls regarding Leh-Ladakh.
In an interview with IANS, she remarked, “He has been a vocal advocate for environmental issues and a committed activist, yet he faced imprisonment without any wrongdoing. Even after his release, his fight continues. This battle is not about discord or turmoil, but about honoring the commitments made to him. Following the abrogation of Article 370, he had shown support for the decision.”
“His current outspokenness suggests potential flaws in the government's actions. I firmly believe that statehood needs to be established in J&K, and Sonam Wangchuk’s requests regarding Leh-Ladakh should be acknowledged,” she continued.
Chaturvedi's comments arise after Wangchuk’s release from Jodhpur Central Jail, where he spent nearly six months in detention, coinciding with the government’s withdrawal of his preventive detention under the NSA.
Wangchuk, aged 59, was charged under this stringent law last year after officials claimed that his protests for statehood and Sixth Schedule protections for Ladakh had incited unrest in Leh, resulting in several fatalities and numerous injuries.
Upon his release, Wangchuk referred to his freedom as a “victory” but raised concerns about the effectiveness of his activism if the issues he champions remain unaddressed. “What significance does my victory hold if the causes we advocate for Ladakh do not prevail?” he questioned, advocating for a “win-win-win” resolution for the region.
The Sixth Schedule, which Wangchuk has been promoting, offers constitutional safeguards for tribal rights, culture, and land. His detention was contested in court, and the government lifted it shortly before the Supreme Court of India was set to hear the case.
Wangchuk's release has sparked renewed debates surrounding the development and governance of Leh-Ladakh, with political leaders and activists underscoring the necessity for the government to address outstanding demands and ensure that the voices of the region's residents are acknowledged.
