New Delhi, Dec 6 (NationPress) Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan ignited controversy on Tuesday by suggesting a potential Venezuela-style operation could occur in India, questioning whether US forces might attempt a similar action against our Prime Minister.
During an interview with IANS, Chavan posed a provocative question: “Could we see a situation akin to what transpired in Venezuela? Will Mr. Trump engage in the kidnapping of our Prime Minister?”
The remarks from the former Chief Minister of Maharashtra are anticipated to generate significant reactions in political arenas, resulting in fierce criticism from the BJP.
Chavan, who has previously challenged the effectiveness of Indian military operations such as Operation Sindoor, is already facing a flood of derision and backlash across social media platforms concerning his insinuations of a Venezuelan-like operation in India.
His comments come in light of the US President's alleged threats to increase tariffs on India, should the nation fail to comply with his demands.
“With a 50% tariff, trade is effectively untenable. This situation essentially obstructs trade between India and the US, particularly regarding our exports. Since a direct ban is not feasible, tariffs are being wielded as a mechanism to halt our trade. This will impose a burden on India,”
Chavan elaborated.
Addressing the ramifications of the US's unilateral tariff hike, he remarked, “The earnings our citizens previously garnered through exports to the US will no longer be accessible. We will need to explore alternative markets, and initiatives in that direction are already in progress.”
“Whether Trump imposes further taxes is of little consequence as the trade between our two nations has effectively come to a standstill,” he added, referencing Trump's alleged threats aimed at India to further escalate tariffs.
Last month, Chavan faced backlash over his critiques of the Indian military's capabilities during Operation Sindoor, claiming that India was outmatched by Pakistan on the first day of the operation.
This latest controversy arises amidst a geopolitical crisis linked to the abduction of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his spouse Cilia Flores in a specialized stealth mission executed by US forces.
Recently, a video featuring Donald Trump captured widespread attention on social media as he warned about the possibility of escalating tariffs on India unless the country reduces its oil imports from Russia.
“They do trade. And, we can impose tariffs on them very swiftly, which would be detrimental for them,” Trump stated to the press while aboard Air Force One.
He also remarked that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is a “good guy,” indicating that he was aware of Trump's dissatisfaction and emphasizing the importance of pleasing him.
