Dhaka, Sep 2 (NationPress) Following the violent confrontations at Bangladesh's Chittagong University (CU), where over 100 individuals sustained injuries, all planned classes and examinations are currently suspended.
Media sources report that the unrest erupted late Saturday night between CU students and local residents after a female student was allegedly assaulted by a dormitory security guard near the university.
An urgent notice regarding the suspension was issued on Monday evening by Acting Controller of Examinations Mamtaz Uddin Ahmed, citing unavoidable circumstances.
In the meantime, the UNO of Hathazari, Abdullah Al Momin, has declared that Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure will be enforced, banning all forms of gatherings, including rallies, protests, and public assemblies.
The order also prohibits the possession of explosives, firearms, or traditional weapons, and restricts the assembly of five or more individuals within the designated area.
Following the violence on Saturday, unrest continued into the next day, resulting in injuries to CU's pro-vice chancellor, proctor, faculty, and students. Reports indicated that local weapons were used in the assaults.
According to the university administration, the clashes resulted in injuries to an estimated 400 to 500 people, as reported by Bangladeshi daily The Business Standard.
Additionally, around 20 students were transferred to Chattogram Medical College Hospital in critical condition.
Tipu Sultan, a senior medical officer at CU's medical center, remarked, "I have never witnessed so many injured students in a single day. I treated nearly a hundred students personally, while several critically injured were referred to Chattogram Medical College Hospital."
Meanwhile, student organizations held demonstrations on Monday night, demanding the resignation of the university administration, which they accuse of failing to ensure safety.
The violent incidents occur amid escalating public unrest in Bangladesh, which has seen numerous protest movements and increasing lawlessness since the interim government led by Yunus took power last August.
