Thiruvananthapuram, July 4 (NationPress) While the Kerala healthcare system is being hailed as one of the finest in India by the ruling Left front, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan is set to embark on a medical trip to the US for treatment and follow-up care.
This journey will last a week, with a stopover in Dubai before heading to the US.
However, his timing raises eyebrows as Health Minister Veena George is under fire from both the Congress and the BJP, who are calling for her resignation due to her alleged mismanagement of recent healthcare crises.
Social media is buzzing with reactions after CM Vijayan criticized Urologist Dr. Harris Chirackal, who highlighted the dire shortage of essential medical supplies in the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College and Hospital. The CM accused him of painting an inaccurate picture of the state's healthcare system, which he defends as highly advanced and consistently recognized both nationally and internationally.
Critics quickly pointed out the contradiction: if Kerala has such an exemplary healthcare system, why is the CM seeking treatment abroad?
Public health advocate and former WHO Consultant Dr. S.S. Lal remarked, "When Kerala is touted as the best, it’s only logical to question why CM Vijayan is leaving the country for medical care. Notably, former Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan has also been receiving treatment at a private hospital, rather than a state facility,” said Lal, a Congress candidate in the 2021 Assembly elections from the Kazhakootam constituency.
Years ago, a similar incident involving Achuthanandan's treatment abroad was used by the Congress-led UDF to criticize the CPI(M) for its perceived double standards.
