Thiruvananthapuram, July 7 (NationPress) As the protests led by the Congress opposition continue to demand the resignation of Kerala Health Minister Veena George over the dismal conditions in government hospitals, a comment made by a Kerala Minister has stirred controversy.
Fisheries and Culture Minister Saji Cherian, known for his controversial statements, sparked reactions as criticisms of Kerala's health sector, often touted as the best, gained momentum.
He stated, "What’s the issue with MLAs or Ministers receiving treatment in private hospitals? Isn’t it natural for individuals to seek the best care? In 2019, I received treatment at a government hospital for fever, but after several days, I was referred to a private hospital, where my life was saved." He questioned the uproar surrounding his comment.
The claim of Kerala having the best health sector faced scrutiny when prominent urologist, Dr. Harris Chirackal, reported a critical lack of medical equipment, leading to postponed surgeries at the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College hospital.
Following this, a toilet block at the Kottayam Medical College hospital collapsed. While George and her colleague, Cooperation Minister V.N. Vasavan, assured the media that the building was closed and only minor injuries occurred, it was later revealed that a woman was trapped and died under the debris.
This incident prompted both the Congress and BJP to criticize George, demanding her resignation for her perceived incompetence in handling the Health Department.
Cherian defended George, stating, "What has she done to warrant such demands for her resignation? There appears to be a deliberate attempt to undermine the state-run health sector in favor of private healthcare. We will stand by her and the integrity of our health sector, as she has committed no wrong."
On Monday, opposition protesters clashed with police in various locations, continuing their demand for George's resignation.
Congress legislator Rahul Mammkoothathil accused George of avoiding reality. He noted, "She convened a meeting regarding a new Nipah case in Palakkad without inviting me, a fellow legislator. Why is she evading responsibility? She often takes credit for the accolades received by Kerala’s health sector, which has been developed through the efforts of previous governments, but shies away when issues arise."
This discussion surrounding Kerala's health sector comes at a time when Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan traveled to the US for medical treatment, and CPI-M veteran V.S. Achuthanandan has been hospitalized in a private facility for two weeks.
