Kottayam, July 3 (NationPress) Protests erupted throughout Kerala on Thursday as Congress and BJP party members took to the streets demanding the resignation of state Health Minister Veena George. The demonstrators asserted that had the two Ministers, George and State Cooperation Minister V.N. Vasavan, acted promptly, the life of Bindhu, a 56-year-old homemaker trapped under the debris of a collapsed three-story building at the Kottayam Medical College hospital, could have been preserved.
Upon arriving at the scene after the building collapse, both Ministers claimed that aside from two individuals who sustained minor injuries, there were no other casualties. They reiterated that the structure was a closed facility and that no one needed to enter it.
Puthuppally MLA Chandy Oommen, son of the late former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, was present at the site and raised concerns, stating, 'This death could have been avoided if rescue efforts had commenced immediately.' Despite his warnings and eyewitness accounts, rescue operations did not begin until two hours later.
Eventually, Bindhu's body was recovered from the rubble and sent for a post-mortem examination. By this time, enraged protesters from the BJP and the Congress led UDF expressed their anger towards the two Ministers, with George becoming the focal point of their ire.
Opposition Leader V.D. Satheesan lamented that due to the incompetence of the two Ministers, particularly the Health Minister, the building was not utilized properly, leading to delays in rescue operations. 'The building contained toilets and was frequented by hospital bystanders. George often speaks out, but had she been more informed, one precious life could have been saved. Therefore, she should take moral responsibility and resign,' Satheesan stated.
State BJP President Rajeev Chandrasekhar criticized George's leadership, claiming that under her watch, the health department has faced significant issues across various sectors. 'Given the numerous failures within the health sector, it would be best for her to resign,' he remarked.
In light of the protests, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan communicated with the two Ministers and health officials regarding the incident. As opposition parties condemned the Ministers, protests intensified throughout the state, resulting in clashes with police, and Vijayan’s convoy faced disruptions.
