Did Minister Veena George Just Blame LoP Satheesan for the Protests?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 21 (NationPress) Kerala's Health Minister Veena George on Saturday accused the Leader of the Opposition, V. D. Satheesan, of provoking protests regarding the alleged surgical error at the Government Medical College Hospital in Alappuzha. The Minister insisted that the government had already implemented all necessary measures concerning the incident.
“I am unsure why this is occurring. Everything that could have been done has been accomplished. The actions taken under the guise of protest are utterly unacceptable,” the Minister expressed, referring to the Youth Congress demonstration outside her residence where protesters placed a wreath at her door.
This protest was triggered by an incident in 2021 where a surgical instrument was reportedly left inside a patient’s abdomen during a procedure at the medical college hospital. Youth Congress members marched to the Minister’s residence with a wreath and, around 8 a.m., allegedly broke through police barriers to place it at her entrance.
The police subsequently removed the wreath.
This incident revealed a security concern, as only three police officers were stationed at the Minister’s residence at that moment, with additional forces arriving approximately 15 minutes after the protest commenced.
Clashes erupted as police tried to detain demonstrators, who resisted attempts to take those arrested into custody. Eventually, the protesters were dispersed.
Meanwhile, the Ambalappuzha police have filed a case under Sections 125 and 125(a) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for jeopardizing human life and personal safety.
The Head of the Department, Dr. Lalithambika, has been named as the primary accused based on a complaint from the patient's relative, Usha Joseph, although additional names may be added as the investigation continues.
An expert committee, including specialists from Thiruvananthapuram and Kottayam Medical Colleges, is expected to submit its findings to the Director of Medical Education.
Additionally, Dr. Shahida, the surgeon, and Nursing Officer Dhanya have been suspended following initial findings that indicated a procedural lapse.
Further actions will be determined based on the committee’s final report.
