Thiruvananthapuram, July 4 (NationPress) As the pressure mounts for the resignation of Kerala Health Minister Veena George from multiple factions, the ruling CPI-M's senior leadership firmly rejected these calls during their weekly assembly on Friday.
Frustrated opposition members have been staging protests throughout the state, where they have clashed with law enforcement in several instances.
In response to the demonstrations, police deployed water cannons and other measures to disperse the crowds.
The demands for George’s resignation have been voiced by the Congress party, the BJP, and the Asha Workers, following her assertion that only two individuals suffered injuries when a building housing a toilet block at the Kottayam Medical College hospital collapsed on Thursday morning.
While she and her cabinet colleague, Cooperation Minister V.N. Vasavan, assured the press that there were no fatalities, 56-year-old Bindhu tragically passed away under the rubble after visiting the facility for treatment. She had gone to use the toilet when the structure fell.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan also addressed the situation on Friday, affirming that the state government would offer robust support to Bindhu’s family and has instructed the relevant authorities to prevent such accidents in the future.
CPI-M State Secretary M.V. Govindan stated that there is no justification for George to step down.
He remarked, "There is a deliberate effort to damage the government's reputation, which has been ongoing for some time. There has been no negligence in initiating rescue operations following the collapse. A segment of the media appears to be collaborating with the private sector to undermine the public health sector," he said.
Meanwhile, Bindhu’s funeral was attended by a large gathering of mourners near her home in Kottayam.
Numerous senior Congress leaders were present, while Vasavan visited the grieving family to express his condolences.
Bindhu’s devastated husband expressed hope following CM Vijayan’s comments, stating, "Earlier, George spoke to me on the phone and assured me she would visit within a day or two."
The Congress party has called for a judicial inquiry, and BJP state President Rajeev Chandrasekhar has demanded legal action against both George and Vasavan.
