Key Takeaways
Bhubaneswar, Jan 16 (NationPress) Tensions flared on Thursday in Sundargarh district of Odisha following rumors concerning the purported sale of beef at a meat shop located in Regent Market within the Sundargarh Town Police jurisdiction.
According to local reports, unrest began when a group of local youths arrived at the site to protest against the alleged sale of beef, escalating the situation. The local police quickly intervened in an attempt to calm both factions.
However, between approximately 3 pm and 3:30 pm, tensions escalated as a significant crowd from both groups gathered at the market. Heated discussions quickly devolved into violence, resulting in extensive stone-pelting from both sides.
During the altercation, numerous vehicles—including an electric car, scooters, and a pickup truck—were damaged, and several shops were vandalized and set ablaze. The police on the scene appeared overwhelmed amidst the sudden outbreak of chaos. Reports indicate that multiple individuals, including one police officer and members from both communities, suffered serious injuries during the clash.
In response, the Sundargarh police acted swiftly, deploying 10 platoons to restore order. A substantial police presence has been established at Regent Market and other sensitive areas throughout the town, including the bus terminal and commercial districts.
Speaking with reporters, DIG Western Range Brijesh Ray stated, “There were allegations regarding the sale of certain meats at Regent Market. Upon receiving the report, both the additional Superintendent of Police and Subdivisional Police Officer arrived at the scene to mediate between the groups. While dialogues were ongoing, stone pelting erupted unexpectedly. The police acted swiftly to regain control. Section 163 of the BNSS Act has been enforced in the area, prohibiting gatherings at the site.”
Additionally, the Odisha Home Department has temporarily suspended internet services in Sundargarh district from 6 pm on January 15 until 6 pm on January 16 to hinder the use of messaging platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, X, and others by anti-social elements for disseminating provocative messages.
The district collector of Sundargarh has also declared the closure of all schools and colleges in the district for Friday due to the ongoing unrest. “Given the current law and order situation in the Sundargarh Municipality Area, all educational institutions within the municipality will remain closed on 16.01.2026,” the order stated.
