Decomposed body found in sack in Kolkata's New Town, face disfigured
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
The decomposed body of a young man, wrapped in a sack and with his face severely disfigured, was recovered from Swamiji Nagar in New Town, on the outskirts of Kolkata, West Bengal, on Saturday, 22 August. Officers from Eco Park police station retrieved the body and dispatched it to Bidhannagar Hospital for an autopsy.
Identity of the Deceased
The victim was initially unidentified. He was subsequently identified as Sourav Biswas, aged between 32 and 35 years, according to investigators. The body bore multiple tattoos, which aided in the identification process. According to local sources, Biswas had been reported missing for approximately three days before the discovery.
What CCTV Footage Revealed
CCTV footage recovered from the site showed a young man carrying the sack-wrapped body on his shoulder and placing it behind a stationary motorbike in the early hours of the morning. The body was then concealed with bricks placed on top of the sack to prevent it from being moved. A local resident told reporters: 'The youth's body was dumped at around 4:20 a.m. The youth who dumped the body stood there for a few minutes. Then he left. Due to the lack of light, the accused's face could not be seen. They dumped the body behind a parked bike, covered it with a sack and placed bricks. The police were soon informed. The officers took the body to Bidhannagar Hospital at around 8 a.m.; the doctors said the body was at least three to four days old.'
Police Assessment and Investigation
In the initial investigation, police estimated that Biswas was killed approximately two to three days before the body was found. Multiple wounds were observed on the body. A senior officer of Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate said: 'An investigation has started to find out who dumped the body. CCTV footage of the area is being monitored to track the youth. The body has been sent for autopsy. The real cause of death will be ascertained once the autopsy report arrives.'
A Pattern of Suspicious Deaths in New Town
This is not the first such incident in the area in recent weeks. On 29 July, the body of a man was recovered from a roadside food stall in the same New Town locality, an incident that had already triggered considerable alarm in the Ram Mandir neighbourhood. Earlier, on 23 July, police had recovered the body of a youth found hanging from a railing in the Dum Dum Park area, also on the northern outskirts of Kolkata. The clustering of three suspicious deaths within a month in adjoining localities has heightened concern among residents and is drawing scrutiny from law enforcement. The autopsy report is expected to shed light on the precise cause of death and may prove critical to the ongoing investigation.
