Tragic Discovery: Elderly Couple Found Dead in Kolkata with Suicide Note
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 17 (NationPress) The remains of an elderly couple were discovered hanging in their residence located in the Haridevpur region on the southern fringes of Kolkata, as reported by local authorities on Tuesday.
The woman's body was found suspended from the ceiling fan on her balcony, with a saree fashioned into a noose around her neck. Meanwhile, the man's body was similarly found hanging from the ceiling fan in an adjacent room, with a portion of the same saree also tied around his neck.
The tragic discovery was made on Monday evening when the couple's hanging bodies were uncovered in their rented accommodation. The individuals were identified as Bikash Das (72) and Basanti Das (63).
This incident has left the local community in shock, especially after the woman's body was initially spotted on the balcony, prompting residents to alert the landlord. Upon receiving this information, officers from the Haridevpur police station promptly arrived at the scene.
According to police reports, a suicide note was found at the location. The note indicated that the couple was facing six months' worth of unpaid rent, which led to constant pressure from their landlord and his family. Overwhelmed by this financial strain, the elderly couple reportedly chose to take their own lives.
The authorities recovered the two bodies and transported them to M.R. Bangur Hospital, where they were declared dead. The Haridevpur Police Station initially launched two cases of unnatural death. Following the clues presented in the suicide note, investigators have since initiated a deeper inquiry.
Interviews with local residents revealed that the couple had been tenants in the Daspara residence for two years. Basanti Devi worked as a domestic caregiver, while Bikash Babu was engaged in property brokerage. They had been enduring financial difficulties for the past eight months.
"The family had been suffering from economic hardships, resulting in overdue rent payments. It has been alleged that the landlady, Bula Pal, was applying relentless pressure on the elderly couple for the overdue rent," stated a senior officer from Kolkata Police.
Furthermore, in his suicide note, Bikash implicated members of the landlord's family—Mousumi Mondal, Gopal Mondal, and Latika Mondal—as contributors to his decision to end his life. Police confirmed that a case of abetment to suicide had been filed against the landlord based on a complaint from a relative of the deceased. However, no arrests have been made thus far.
