New Delhi, April 29 (NationPress) The Congress party has reiterated its call for a special session of Parliament to denounce the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. Congress General Secretary (Communications) Jairam Ramesh emphasized the necessity for the government to respond to the demands of the Opposition and hold a session to strengthen national unity and resolve.
Making a reference to a similar event from 1994, Ramesh noted that both Houses of Parliament convened to unanimously adopt a resolution regarding Jammu and Kashmir.
“On February 22, 1994, both Houses of Parliament unanimously passed a resolution affirming that J&K is an integral part of India. The moment has arrived to restate, renew, and refresh this commitment,” he posted on X.
Ramesh also shared the 1994 resolution, which proclaimed Jammu and Kashmir as an inseparable part of India and condemned any attempts at its separation. The resolution declared, “On behalf of the People of India, we firmly assert that the State of Jammu and Kashmir has been, is, and will remain an integral part of India; any efforts to separate it will be opposed by all necessary means. India possesses the will and capacity to counter all threats to its unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity; and calls for Pakistan to vacate the Indian State of Jammu and Kashmir, which they have occupied through aggression; and resolves that any attempts to interfere in the internal affairs of India will be met with strong resistance.”
Previously, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi sent individual letters to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging him to summon a special session of both Houses.
In his letter dated April 28, Rahul Gandhi expressed, “The terrorist attack in Pahalgam has shocked every Indian. During this critical time, India must demonstrate that we stand united against terrorism. The Opposition believes a special session of both Houses of Parliament should be convened, allowing the representatives of the people to express their unity and determination.”
Kharge echoed this sentiment, stating, “In a time where unity and solidarity are crucial, the Opposition believes that calling a special session would serve as a powerful testament to our collective resolve in response to the heinous terror attack on innocent citizens on April 22, 2025.”
