Imphal, Oct 5 (NationPress) Ten additional BJP MLAs set off for Delhi on Sunday, seeking to engage with the party’s central leaders to expedite the formation of a popular government in Manipur. Several legislators, including former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, are currently in the capital advocating for the reinstatement of a government that reflects the people's will.
Prior to their departure, BJP member Thounaojam Shyamkumar expressed that should their meeting with central leaders not occur, or if their calls for a government formation are disregarded, they may resort to a “tough decision”.
“The citizens of Manipur desire a government that resonates with their needs. The state’s situation is stabilizing now. Establishing a popular government will significantly aid in managing the circumstances and facilitating developmental initiatives for the overall welfare of our people,” Shyamkumar conveyed to reporters at the Imphal international airport.
Before his trip to Delhi on Saturday, former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh remarked to the media at the Imphal International Airport that a delegation of BJP MLAs would be meeting with central leaders. “We will request the central authorities to assist in forming a new popular government, address the challenges faced by internally displaced persons (IDPs), and ensure the reopening of crucial highways promptly,” he stated.
Accompanying Biren Singh to Delhi were former Health and Family Welfare Minister Sapam Ranjan Singh, former Social Welfare Minister Heikham Dingo Singh, and BJP legislator Tongbram Robindro Singh.
On Saturday, another group of MLAs, including former minister Leishangthem Susindro Meitei, Thangjam Arunkumar, and Lourembam Rameshwor Meetei, also departed for Delhi.
Expected to leave Imphal soon are Speaker Thokchom Satyabrata Singh, former minister Govindas Konthoujam, and MLAs Kongkham Robindro, Sapam Kunjakeshwor, Thounaojam Shyamkumar, and Karam Shyam.
The state previously operated under a BJP-led coalition government, overseen by former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, prior to the imposition of President’s Rule on February 13 this year.
Singh resigned from his Chief Minister position on February 9, just days before President’s Rule was enacted following prolonged ethnic violence that erupted on May 3, 2023.
The Manipur Assembly, consisting of 60 members, is currently under suspended animation after the imposition of President’s Rule, with its term set to last until 2027.

Senior government officials, including Chief Secretary Puneet Kumar Goel and Commissioner-cum-Secretary (Home) N. Ashok Kumar, have also traveled to Delhi, though the purpose of their visit remains unclear. Following the passage of statutory resolutions in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, President’s Rule was extended for an additional six months starting August 13, 2025.
