Imphal, Dec 13 (NationPress) A delegation of at least 12 BJP MLAs from Manipur, which includes former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh and state Assembly Speaker Thokchom Satyabrata Singh, departed for New Delhi on Saturday to participate in a crucial meeting called by the party’s central leadership scheduled for Sunday.
BJP representatives in Imphal suggested that the focus of the upcoming meeting will likely revolve around the formation of a new government.
With increasing speculation about the establishment of a new government and heightened requests from numerous BJP MLAs and leaders for the party to take the reins, this meeting has become politically significant.
Former Chief Minister Singh confirmed the Sunday meeting in the national capital, stating that the central leadership has directed every BJP MLA from the state to be present.
While no formal agenda has been provided for the meeting, discussions concerning government formation are expected, he noted.
“The BJP MLAs have been summoned to Delhi to assess the situation in Manipur. While we lack details about the specific agenda, it may involve the formation of a new government,” Singh shared with the media prior to his departure.
He expressed hope for a favorable outcome from Sunday’s meeting that could lead to improvements for Manipur. Singh’s son-in-law and MLA Rajkumar Imo Singh also mentioned that they had been invited by central leaders for the Sunday gathering.
“We’ll see what unfolds during the meeting. We don’t have extensive details,” he remarked.
The BJP holds 37 seats in the 60-member Manipur Assembly. The strife-affected Manipur has been under President’s Rule since February 13, shortly after N. Biren Singh resigned from the Chief Minister position.
Following the imposition of President’s Rule, the 60-member state assembly is currently in suspended animation and is set to remain so until 2027.
Last month, two senior central BJP leaders, National General Secretary (Organisation) B. L. Santhosh and the party’s Northeast coordinator Sambit Patra, spent three days in Manipur, conducting a series of meetings with local party leaders and MLAs, which has intensified speculation about the potential formation of a new government in the Northeastern state.
In October, 26 BJP MLAs, including Biren Singh, met with Santhosh and Patra in New Delhi and urged them to “install a popular government” in Manipur, expressing their readiness to govern collectively as a united team.
Former Chief Minister Biren Singh stated that all BJP legislators in Manipur are united in their efforts to form a popular government.
He emphasized that the process of government formation is already in motion, while he refrained from commenting on individual opinions expressed by legislators.
