Guwahati, Oct 5 (NationPress) The President of the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), Hagrama Mohilary, has been officially sworn in as the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) this past Sunday, marking his return to lead the autonomous council after a five-year hiatus.
The ceremony took place at the Bodoland Secretariat Field in Kokrajhar district, under cloudy skies and light rain, with former minister Rihon Daimary also taking the oath as the Deputy CEM.
The BPF’s remarkable win in the recent BTC elections, securing 28 out of 40 seats, facilitated Mohilary’s comeback to power.
The BTC oversees the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), which includes the districts of Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baksa, and Udalguri.
The oath-taking ceremony was graced by several notable figures, including Assam Governor Laxman Prasad Acharya, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, state cabinet members, and Tipra Motha chief Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma from Tripura.
With this new term, Mohilary has reiterated BPF’s stronghold in the political arena of Bodoland, committing to prioritize peace, development, and welfare programs for the region's inhabitants. His return is viewed as a pivotal political change after years of UPPL’s governance over the BTC.
Upon taking office, Mohilary signaled the potential for a renewed political partnership with the ruling BJP.
Insiders reveal that the BPF has already forwarded a formal proposal to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, exploring a possible alliance.
In response, Sarma informed reporters that the notion of collaboration between the two parties was “not surprising,” considering their historical ties.
“I have received the proposal discussed in their meeting. I believe Hagrama will collaborate with the BJP, and we will offer our support as well. My relationship with him dates back to 2001, and despite his five-year absence from the BTC, our personal connection remained intact,” the Chief Minister stated, hinting that these relationships could soon evolve into political cooperation.
However, Mohilary previously indicated that the BPF would refrain from rejoining the BJP-led NDA while the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) continues to be part of the alliance—highlighting the intricate political landscape currently unfolding in Assam’s Bodoland region.
