Guwahati, Aug 5 (NationPress) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday praised the BJP government for bringing enduring peace and advancement to the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), labeling it as one of the party’s most notable accomplishments during its time in office.
During a series of public gatherings throughout BTR ahead of the forthcoming Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections, Sarma highlighted the region's remarkable transformation from a center of violence to a symbol of peace and prosperity.
“BTR was previously associated with fear and chaos. In the past, elections were plagued by armed intimidation – AK-47s dominated the streets, and candidates solicited votes under duress,” remarked Sarma.
“Today, candidates appeal for votes with folded hands. This illustrates the change the BJP has facilitated.”
The Chief Minister, who has been visiting the area for three days, pointed to enhancements in healthcare, education, infrastructure, and availability of clean drinking water as indicators of the development efforts led by the BJP in the region.
“We have achieved a peaceful and progressive Bodoland. This is one of the most significant success stories of New Assam,” Sarma stated, emphasizing that the BTR now serves as a beacon of mutual coexistence and inclusive growth.
On the sensitive topic of land encroachment within the BTR, Sarma made it clear that any decisions regarding eviction must originate from the council itself.
“We will provide support if requested, but the initiative must be theirs,” he explained.
The Chief Minister also highlighted the necessity of a consultative governance approach, especially concerning land rights for indigenous populations in tribal areas.
As political momentum builds ahead of the anticipated BTC elections in September, Sarma noted the increasing public enthusiasm for the BJP and expressed trust in the party's chances at the polls.
Currently, the BJP collaborates with the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) and Gana Suraksha Party (GSP) in governing the BTC, but the party plans to contest the elections independently.
When questioned about the BJP's ambitions to establish the next council independently, Sarma stated, “That is not our primary focus right now. We will determine the number of seats to contest by August 20.”
The Chief Minister also commented on speculation regarding a potential alliance between the UPPL, led by BTC Chief Executive Member Pramod Boro, and the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), headed by Hagrama Mohilary.
“If they decide to join forces, it will simplify matters for us, as the state government will only need to coordinate with one party,” he noted.
Regarding the BJP's state ally, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), Sarma advised the party to nominate candidates only where they have solid electoral prospects.
“They should not contest merely to defeat us,” he added pointedly.
