Guwahati, Sep 17 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, on Wednesday emphasized the state government's efforts in promoting skill development and creating livelihood opportunities within the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR). He pointed out that these ongoing initiatives are focused on empowering the youth and transforming the local economy.

In a statement shared on X, CM Sarma revealed that the state has introduced 15 new trades across 22 enhanced training units, significantly improving training standards in the area.

Over the past four years, 20,097 young individuals have received training in various sectors, out of a goal of 50,000.

“Bodoland is witnessing a boost in trade, fueled by training and transformation,” the Chief Minister noted, adding that the government has certified 4,680 individuals under the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) program in crucial roles such as electrician, plumber, mason, and farmer.

He also mentioned that 1,723 individuals have been trained in piggery, goat and sheep farming, and fish seed cultivation across five districts within the BTR.

Additionally, over 1,800 youth have benefited from placement-linked training in tailoring, floriculture, and food services, while 75 candidates have gained skills in heavy vehicle and JCB driving as well as mechanical operations.

Political analysts interpret Sarma’s intensified focus on Bodoland with regard to the forthcoming Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections, which are set for September 22.

The BJP, which collaborates with its regional ally United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) in the BTC, is eager to strengthen its foothold in the autonomous region, where employment and economic self-reliance issues are of political significance.

During his recent engagements, Sarma has consistently emphasized that the BJP-led administration is dedicated to achieving “peace with progress” in Bodoland.

“The youth of Bodoland are not merely recipients of government programs; they are integral partners in constructing a brighter future. By equipping them with contemporary skills, we are paving the way for prosperity and stability,” he stated.

With the BTC elections approaching, Sarma’s message intertwines development metrics with political undertones, portraying the BJP’s governance model as one capable of delivering both stability and opportunities in a region historically affected by ethnic strife and economic stagnation.

Point of View

The initiatives led by the Assam government in Bodoland represent a significant step towards addressing the region's historical challenges of economic underdevelopment and ethnic unrest.
