Is Congress Split Over ED Raids on I-PAC?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Jan 9 (NationPress) The leaders of the Indian National Congress (INC) appear to have differing viewpoints regarding the Enforcement Directorate (ED)'s coordinated raids at the India Political Action Committee (I-PAC) office and the residence of I-PAC co-founder Pratik Jain on Loudon Street in Kolkata.
The discrepancies in opinions are particularly noticeable between a national-level leader and a state-level leader from West Bengal.
Senior Congress figure and esteemed Supreme Court advocate, Abhishek Manu Singhvi, publicly criticized the ED for its actions against the I-PAC office and Jain's residence.
"The ED is now targeting political consultants because it has failed to uncover facts, truth, or credibility. The raid on I-PAC in Kolkata is yet another instance of the BJP's coercive tactics. Agencies are weaponized whenever democracy is at stake," Singhvi remarked.
Interestingly, Singhvi has represented the Mamata Banerjee government in several prominent cases in both the Supreme Court and the Calcutta High Court.
In stark contrast, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, the former state Congress president and a five-time Congress Lok Sabha member, expressed skepticism about Banerjee's concerns regarding the ED's actions against I-PAC.
"What is causing the Chief Minister's distress over I-PAC? There must be some hidden truth behind it," Chowdhury stated, reflecting on the ED's actions and Banerjee's subsequent reactions.
Moreover, Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, echoed this sentiment on Thursday, questioning the Chief Minister's sudden visit to Jain's residence and the I-PAC office while the ED raids were ongoing. Reports indicate she left with several documents and electronic files.
"Why is the Chief Minister so apprehensive about the ED's raid at a private corporate entity's office?" Adhikari questioned on Thursday.
Since 2020, I-PAC has been functioning as the strategic vote agency for the Trinamool Congress.
