Chennai, Nov 22 (NationPress) In a decisive move aimed at quelling ongoing speculation and advancing alliance preparations, the Congress has established a high-level committee tasked with negotiating seat-sharing arrangements with the DMK for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
This initiative arises amid increasing political discourse regarding the stability of the INDIA bloc in the state and uncertainties about the Congress’ commitment to its Dravidian partner.
The five-member committee comprises AICC Tamil Nadu and Puducherry incharge Girish Chodankar, national leaders Suraj Hegde and Nivedith Alva, TNCC president K. Selvaperunthagai, and Congress Legislature Party leader S. Rajeshkumar.
According to party insiders, these appointments were finalized following discussions within the AICC, aimed at forming a balanced team capable of managing both the political and organizational dimensions of the negotiations.
Sources have indicated that Congress leadership is preparing to formally communicate with DMK president and Chief Minister M.K. Stalin.
Although the DMK has not yet publicly responded, the Congress initiative is perceived as a direct answer to concerns raised by the ruling party regarding persistent rumors of a potential Congress–TVK alliance.
A senior TNCC official noted that the DMK leadership has conveyed to the AICC that the ongoing speculation about the alliance structure is generating unnecessary uncertainty during this crucial election preparation period.
The official stated that the Congress high command recognizes that circulating narratives about potential ties with other parties, particularly the TVK, which has gained attention since its inception, could undermine the public messaging of the INDIA bloc.
“The DMK sought clarity. They believed that discussions regarding a possible Congress–TVK collaboration were creating avoidable confusion among party cadres. This committee is a proactive measure to rebuild trust and ensure the alliance remains focused and intact,” the leader added.
According to TNCC sources, the committee will engage in negotiations with a comprehensive mandate to address all facets of the alliance, including seat distribution and the Congress’ long-standing request for a significant role in any forthcoming coalition government.
They underscored that the Congress is approaching these discussions with the intention of amicably resolving differences while reaffirming its position within the DMK-led front. The party believes that a timely and transparent negotiation process will bolster the coalition’s prospects and project unity as Tamil Nadu approaches a pivotal electoral phase.
