Congress Candidates Abhishek Singhvi and Narender Reddy Nominate for Rajya Sabha from Telangana
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Hyderabad, March 5 (NationPress) On Thursday, Abhishek Manu Singhvi and Vem Narender Reddy submitted their nominations as the Congress party's official candidates for two Rajya Sabha positions from Telangana.
Their nomination documents were presented to the returning officer, Upender Reddy, at the Telangana Assembly.
This procedure was carried out under the supervision of legislative affairs minister D. Sridhar Babu.
Numerous dignitaries attended the event, including Mahesh Kumar Goud, president of the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC), along with ministers, Congress MPs, and MLAs.
Previously, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) had declared Singhvi and Narender Reddy as their candidates.
Singhvi has been chosen to serve another term representing Telangana, while Narender Reddy will be vying for a seat in the upper House of Parliament for the first time.
Notably, Narender Reddy is a close associate and advisor to Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy. The party leadership opted for him despite the presence of several senior leaders.
The decision to nominate Singhvi, a seasoned Supreme Court lawyer, for a second term was almost certain, given his legal expertise and articulate contributions in Parliament, which are considered vital assets for the party at a national level.
The terms of the current members, Abhishek Singhvi and KR Suresh Reddy, are slated to expire on April 9, prompting the need for elections.
Suresh Reddy serves as the leader of the BRS Parliamentary Party, while Singhvi was elected in 2024 to fill the seat previously held by K. Keshava Rao, who resigned to join the Congress party.
The deadline for filing nominations for the elections, scheduled for March 16, is Thursday (March 5).
Given that the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) has not indicated intentions to contest these elections, it is likely that both Singhvi and Suresh Reddy will be elected unopposed.
The ruling party possesses the necessary strength within the Telangana Assembly to secure both seats.
The Congress party holds 66 MLAs in a 119-member Assembly, while its ally, the Communist Party of India (CPI), has one representative. The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), a party allied with Congress, has seven MLAs.
On the surface, the BRS has 37 members; however, 10 of them switched allegiances to Congress in 2024. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) currently has eight MLAs.
