What Issues Will Congress Raise in Parliament’s Budget Session Starting Tomorrow?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 27 (NationPress) The Congress party is set to address a range of significant issues, such as the reformulation of the VB-G RAM G Law, the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, the deforestation and mining in the Aravalli region, and India's foreign policy during the initial phase of the two-part Budget Session of Parliament commencing Wednesday.
The Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) convened today at the residence of its Chairperson, Sonia Gandhi, with notable attendees including party President and Rajya Sabha leader Mallikarjun Kharge and the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi.
Despite the government's firm stance during an all-party meeting on Tuesday, stating that it would not retract the recently enacted VB–G RAM G Law, and the discussion on the SIR exercise already conducted, Congress Rajya Sabha member Syed Naseer Hussain insisted on a “total rollback.”
While the government emphasized that the primary agenda of the session would be the Budget, it mentioned that MPs could also bring up other topics during the discussion of the Motion of Thanks to the President’s Address.
However, after the CPP meeting, Hussain criticized the government as “arrogant,” asserting that electoral reforms should be based on Congress’s recommendations.
“Representatives from various states reported how the excesses of SIR are causing turmoil, generating confusion, and infringing upon voters’ rights,” stated the Rajya Sabha member.
“It is crucial to address this vigorously because vote theft is a pressing concern,” he added, describing all elections post-2003 as a farce.
Furthermore, the Congress leader noted that environmental matters, particularly concerning the Aravalli Hills, which is currently embroiled in a significant legal and environmental dispute, would also be raised.
Additionally, the party plans to discuss the Great Nicobar Project, aimed at transforming the islands into a key logistics, trade, and defense hub while ensuring environmental and tribal welfare.
He also mentioned that the party would address the issue of statehood for Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.
Congress has been persistently advocating for the restoration of statehood for Jammu and Kashmir and the inclusion of Ladakh under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.
Interestingly, Hussain serves as the Congress General Secretary overseeing Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. The party also intends to highlight urban governance issues, particularly the recent fatalities linked to water contamination in Indore, as well as a series of accidents on the Indore-Ahmedabad National Highway, which resulted in 18 deaths.
Moreover, the party is dissatisfied with the Centre’s foreign policy, with Hussain claiming it is currently facing tariff threats from the US as a consequence.
“Foreign policy is impacting the economy,” he asserted, pointing out that the depreciating value of the Rupee is disrupting the economy and adversely affecting businesses, particularly in the MSME sector.
When questioned about Parliament members from the Opposition INDIA Bloc, he referred to the coalition directly. He stated that all floor leaders of the Opposition parties in Parliament would convene at Kharge’s office to discuss the issues and explore potential coordination and management.
