New Delhi, Nov 12 (NationPress) Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Abu Azmi stirred up significant political controversy on Wednesday by comparing the investigation into the Delhi blasts with the 2006 Mumbai train blasts case. He urged the government to avoid unjust arrests aimed at concealing its own failures. Speaking to the press, Azmi insisted that those responsible for the heinous Delhi blasts should face justice and be executed within six months, but warned against making random and wrongful arrests to mask the security failures that allowed such a tragedy to occur in the national capital.
The BJP quickly countered Azmi’s statements, accusing him of siding with terrorists. BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari argued that the SP leader was defending individuals like Umar, Muzammil, and Shaheen, who are under investigation for their alleged links to the Delhi blasts.
Bhandari remarked, “This is the same Samajwadi Party that previously sought to withdraw cases against terrorists,” adding that soon the ‘ecosystem’ would emerge to justify Azmi’s claims.
Earlier, Azmi directed his criticism toward the Maharashtra government for its lack of convictions in the 2006 Mumbai train blasts, asserting that innocent individuals should not be wrongfully implicated in the Delhi blasts investigation. “Detaining anyone based solely on suspicion is a grave injustice to innocent people, reflecting the inefficiency and incompetence of the authorities,” he stated.
Calling for prompt justice in the Delhi blasts inquiry, Azmi said, “The guilty should be prosecuted and sentenced to death within six months, but innocents must not be arrested. The Mumbai train blasts, which caused 187 fatalities, saw no convictions, and numerous suspects were imprisoned for 19 years without being found guilty, leading to their eventual release by the High Court.”
Azmi's comments come shortly after Union Home Minister Amit Shah's directives for investigative agencies to “hunt down” all involved in the blasts.
The BJP has reacted firmly to Azmi’s assertions, accusing him of “standing by” the terrorists. BJP leader Rajeev Chandrashekhar suggested that while Delhi experienced a terror incident, some parties continue to cater to radical factions, thus encouraging extremism and radicalism in the nation.
