Abu Azmi Supports Imran Masood's Call to Safeguard Innocents Amid Terror Allegations

Key Takeaways
Mumbai, Feb 24 (NationPress) The head of the Maharashtra Samajwadi Party, MLA Abu Azmi, expressed his support for Congress MP Imran Masood on Tuesday, emphasizing the need for authorities to guarantee that "innocent individuals" are not apprehended. Masood made these comments following a police operation targeting a supposed terror plot involving eight suspects alleged to be linked with Pakistan's ISI and radical groups from Bangladesh.
Azmi echoed Masood's sentiments, claiming that members of the Muslim community are being "deliberately targeted" in India. His remarks came a day after Masood highlighted the importance of exercising caution when dealing with terror suspects.
“I cannot confirm who has been detained. It is possible for individuals to spend decades in prison only to be exonerated later. While stringent measures against terrorism are essential, innocent people must not be taken into custody. It is crucial to protect those who are eventually released from wrongful accusations,” Masood told IANS.
Azmi stated to IANS, “He is completely right, and I stand with him. In the case of the Mumbai serial blasts, 12 young men were convicted and sentenced to death by a lower court. They were later acquitted by the High Court, yet the government pursued the case in the Supreme Court.”
“In the Malegaon blast incident, individuals such as Purohit Pandey were found guilty, but directives were given to the government lawyer to take a lenient approach. Eventually, they were acquitted, and no further legal actions were taken,” he added.
“This clearly illustrates the state of affairs in this nation. Muslims are systematically targeted,” Azmi asserted.
The political responses emerged after police arrested eight individuals from various locations in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal for allegedly conspiring to execute a significant terror operation under the guidance of Pakistan's ISI and extremist organizations from Bangladesh.
On Saturday, law enforcement also raised concerns regarding a potential explosion near Delhi’s Red Fort after intelligence indicated that the Pakistan-based terrorist group Lashkar-e-Taiba had compiled a list of high-profile targets in India.
Sources revealed that a coordinated security operation was initiated following specific intelligence regarding a suspected terror module plotting actions across different regions of the country.
During the raids, authorities confiscated multiple mobile devices and SIM cards from the suspects. These items are currently under investigation to assess the scope and influence of the network.
This comes on the heels of a car explosion near the Red Fort on November 10, which resulted in 13 fatalities and injured over 20 others.
