Mumbai, July 2 (NationPress) The chief of the Maharashtra Samajwadi Party, Abu Asim Azmi, has openly condemned the state government regarding the contentious Maharashtra Public Safety Bill 2024. Activists, civil society groups, and Left parties have declared their intention to band together in opposition to this proposed legislation.
Azmi raised concerns over the necessity of this new law, pointing out that there are already existing laws in place capable of imprisoning individuals or even sentencing them to death.
“What purpose does the introduction of a new law serve? There is no advantage to it. The secularism of our nation, along with the freedom of speech that citizens hold dear, is being undermined. Those who uphold the Constitution are undoubtedly disheartened by this,” Azmi stated in an interview with IANS.
Furthermore, Azmi addressed the recent controversy surrounding the Pandharpur Yatra, urging the state government to intervene and maintain public order.
“The participants consist of priests who revere Lord Krishna. The government should act and ensure that if any individuals with malicious intent join in, they are apprehended and penalized to prevent such incidents from recurring. The government needs to be vigilant,” he asserted.
It is noteworthy that on June 22, Azmi made a divisive statement regarding the Pandharpur Yatra, mentioning that the roads become congested due to the ‘wari’. He argued that while there are no objections from Muslims during Hindu festivals, complaints arise when Muslims engage in prayers.
Azmi also commented on the recent reunion of estranged cousins Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray, who have joined forces against the imposition of Hindi in Maharashtra schools.
“Let them unite, that’s acceptable. However, it appears to me that this will certainly weaken the Maha Vikas Aghadi. We stand apart and have no involvement in it,” he concluded.
In related news, on Tuesday, the Shiv Sena (UBT) and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) extended a joint invitation for a ‘victory rally’ in Mumbai on July 5, following the Maharashtra government’s decision to retract its three-language policy for schools.
Initially intended as a protest against the imposition of Hindi, the July 5 gathering has now been transformed into a celebration of victory. It is set to commence at the NSCI Dome in Worli at 10 a.m.
This formal announcement for the event, labeled ‘Marathi Vijay Diwas’, identifies the cousins Raj and Uddhav Thackeray as hosts.
Titled ‘Marathicha Awaaz’, the occasion will not display any party symbols or flags but will feature a graphic representation of Maharashtra.
