CPI-M Urges Immediate Action from Centre for Kerala Landslide Victims' Assistance

Kolkata, Dec 9 (NationPress) The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) has demanded swift action from the Central government to assist the victims of the tragic landslide that struck Wayanad, Kerala, in July, resulting in the loss of more than 250 lives.

"In spite of the state's urgent request for Rs 214.68 crore for immediate relief and Rs 2,319.1 crore for thorough recovery and reconstruction, the Centre has not approved the necessary funds even after a span of four months. The decision to not classify the landslide as a 'calamity of severe nature' and the reluctance to waive loans for the impacted families reveal a profoundly unjust and inhumane stance, which undermines the principles of federal support during crises," stated the CPI-M Politburo.

Earlier on Monday, a senior leader from the Left and the Chief Minister of Kerala criticized Union Home Minister Amit Shah for the delay in providing a special package for the rehabilitation of landslide victims.

“This is the most devastating tragedy our state has faced, yet the Centre is evading its responsibilities. Home Minister Shah attributed the delay in fund release to Kerala's late response. However, all such claims by the Centre are unfounded,” remarked the Chief Minister.

He noted that this is not the first instance where Home Minister Amit Shah has dealt with a situation akin to Wayanad.

"Initially, HM Amit Shah referenced a nonexistent weather report in Parliament. No such warning was ever issued by the Central government. His latest remarks in Parliament should be viewed similarly," Vijayan commented.

The Home Minister previously indicated that the Kerala government submitted its memorandum with a recovery and reconstruction estimate of Rs 2,219.03 crore only on November 13.

Meanwhile, the CPI-M Politburo has reiterated its position that the Bangladesh interim government and authorities must guarantee the safety and full protection of religious minorities.

"The administration appears to be overlooking the activities of Islamist fundamentalist forces in this regard. Concurrently, the Politburo condemned the attempts by BJP-RSS and Hindutva factions in India, which seek to incite tensions through inflammatory propaganda. Such actions will not benefit the interests of minorities in Bangladesh," the statement concluded.
