New Delhi, Oct 31 (NationPress) The Delhi Police have apprehended a 32-year-old individual for allegedly trying to extort Rs 40 lakh from a businessman based in Paharganj by sending threats through spoofed international WhatsApp numbers, according to police reports released on Friday.
The suspect, identified as Ramzan Ali Hashmi from Chhattarpur, reportedly targeted his former employer, demanding money in exchange for the safety of both the victim and his family.
A complaint was lodged on October 26 by Manoj Kumar Kashyap, who indicated that he had been receiving numerous threatening calls and WhatsApp messages from international numbers since October 10.
The threats began with messages sent to the complainant's wife, followed by direct menacing communications and ransom demands aimed at Kashyap.
Out of fear for his safety, he sought police assistance, leading to a case being registered under charges of extortion and criminal intimidation at the Paharganj police station.
In response to the complaint, a specialized team led by the ACP-Paharganj and the Paharganj SHO was established. This team, which included SI Vikram Paul, SI Arun, SI Vikash, HC Dinesh, and Constable Puneet, initiated a technical investigation.
Investigators traced the IP addresses associated with the spoofed WhatsApp calls to identify the actual mobile number used for the threats. This led them to Chhattarpur, where the suspect was apprehended.
“During the interrogation, the suspect admitted to making extortion calls to the complainant, stating that he had previously worked at the complainant's factory in Naraina and was well-acquainted with his personal and professional affairs. He cited personal debts and upcoming wedding expenses as the motivation for his actions,” the police reported in their press release.
The police seized two mobile phones—Tecno and Oppo—along with a Lenovo laptop allegedly used in the commission of the crime.
Central District DCP Nidhin Valsan confirmed the arrest, highlighting that the prompt action by law enforcement prevented a significant financial and personal security threat to the victim.
