Nicosia, June 16 (NationPress) In a touching display of respect, a member of the Nicosia Municipal Council touched the feet of Prime Minister Narendra Modi upon his arrival to explore the historic region along the ceasefire line, accompanied by the country's President, Nikos Christodoulides, on Monday.
As the members of the Municipal Council gathered to greet PM Modi, Michaela Kythreoti Mhlapa performed this act as a symbol of admiration. Despite having previously discouraged such gestures, PM Modi was seen folding his hands and bestowing blessings upon the young council member for her heartfelt act, which has since gained significant attention on social media.
BJP spokesperson C.R. Kesavan remarked on X, "First we witnessed Papua New Guinea's PM James Marape touching PM Narendra Modi ji's feet during his visit, and now Michaela Kythreoti Mhlapa from Nicosia reflects their profound respect for India's culture, 'parampara', and civilizational heritage. PM Modi ji has not only showcased India's strength but has also significantly elevated its global standing."
During his visit to Papua New Guinea in May 2023 for a crucial summit with 14 Pacific island countries, PM Modi was similarly honored by PM Marape, who touched his feet as a sign of respect for a great leader.
Notably, Papua New Guinea typically refrains from giving ceremonial welcomes after sunset, but an exception was made for PM Modi, highlighting the importance of his visit.
On Monday, President Christodoulides awarded PM Modi the esteemed Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia, marking the 23rd international accolade received by PM Modi from a foreign nation. Analysts suggest that no Indian Prime Minister has achieved such a significant global impact.
During his two-day official visit to Cyprus, PM Modi was welcomed by President Christodoulides as a military band performed in tribute. The national anthems were played, and PM Modi laid a wreath at the statue of Archbishop Makarios III.
A private discussion between the two leaders followed. President Christodoulides expressed, "It is a great honor to host you on this historic visit, 23 years since the last Indian Prime Minister visited Cyprus. Your presence emphasizes our mutual commitment to strengthening bilateral ties across various sectors, including economy, trade, defense, technology, tourism, and connectivity. The strong interest from both Indian and Cypriot business communities was evident at yesterday's forum."
The subsequent Joint Declaration illustrated the new chapter in India-Cyprus relations, which also extends to the broader European and international landscape.
President Christodoulides stated, "Cyprus stands as a reliable ally of India in the strategically significant Eastern Mediterranean and wider Middle East. Additionally, as a member of the European Union, Cyprus serves as India's gateway to Europe. With Cyprus set to assume the EU Council Presidency on January 1, 2026, we look forward to enhancing India's strategic relations with the EU."
He further thanked PM Modi for his longstanding support regarding the Cyprus issue and expressed Cyprus's backing in combating international terrorism.
