Mumbai, Nov 25 (NationPress) The Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee has formally requested the State Election Commission (SEC) to prolong the deadline for submitting objections and suggestions regarding the draft voter lists published by various municipal corporations across the state, arguing that the current seven-day limit is insufficient.
The state Congress president Harshwardhan Sapkal, along with Congress Legislature Party leader Vijay Wadettiwar and Legislative Council group leader Satej Patil, conveyed their concerns in a letter to the SEC. They pointed out that the draft voter list for municipal elections was unveiled on November 20, with a deadline for objections set for November 27.
However, several municipal corporations have indicated a need for an extension of this deadline to adequately address objections and suggestions related to the draft voter lists. The current timeframe of just seven days is deemed too brief, and they recommend a 15-day extension.
“In many cases, the draft voter lists have not been organized properly by wards. Numerous voters’ names have been mistakenly relocated from their actual residences to other areas, and the volume of such instances is significant. The process for submitting objections is also notably complex, requiring each individual to submit an application in a specific format along with an Aadhaar card. This procedure is cumbersome and time-intensive,” stated Sapkal.
“If an individual or political party presents a legitimate objection or suggestion to the relevant election authority, complaints concerning multiple individuals should be acknowledged; however, that is not occurring at present. To maintain clarity and transparency in the voter lists, it is essential to record the complaints of political parties and every citizen. Given the substantial population in each ward, verifying the voter lists will require additional time. Hence, the deadline must be prolonged,” added Sapkal.
The Congress party's request for an extension comes just a day after a similar appeal was made jointly by Shiv Sena UBT chief Uddhav Thackeray and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena founder Raj Thackeray in a letter to the SEC.
They urged the State Election Commission to provide a 21-day period for submitting suggestions and objections or to cancel the elections altogether until the electoral rolls can be corrected.
They also called upon Maharashtra State Election Commissioner Dinesh Waghmare to take immediate action to rectify serious discrepancies and confusion in the electoral rolls published for the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections.
