New Delhi, Oct 30 (NationPress) In a significant move against narcotics trafficking as part of the 'Drugs-Free Delhi' initiative, the Delhi Police Crime Branch has dismantled an inter-state drug distribution network, apprehending four suspects and seizing 3.150 kg of high-quality charas valued at about Rs 1.2 crore in the global market. A Santro vehicle utilized for smuggling the drugs was also confiscated.
As per the Delhi Police, the Anti-Robbery and Snatching Cell (ARSC) team intercepted a vehicle near Mukandpur Chowk on October 22 based on intelligence regarding a supplier arriving from Mandi, Himachal Pradesh.
The vehicle, operated by Chunni Lal, was pursued for nearly five kilometers before being halted. Initial searches were unproductive, prompting the deployment of a dog squad. The K-9 unit dog, 'Amro', successfully detected the charas hidden within a specially constructed cavity in the car.
“Dog 'Amro' from the K-9 unit performed exceptionally, locating the contraband concealed in a unique compartment of the vehicle. A total of 2.060 kg of charas, with an international market value of Rs 80 Lakh, was recovered from their possession,” the police stated in their press release.
Authorities revealed that Chunni Lal had previously been convicted in a Himachal Pradesh NDPS case, serving a decade in prison before being released in 2023.
He allegedly resumed his drug trafficking activities shortly after. Following his interrogation, supplier Prakash Chand from Kullu, Himachal Pradesh, was also arrested on October 28.
In a distinct operation on October 24, the same team apprehended Mumbai resident Yogesh Kolambekar from Mukarba Chowk, possessing 1.092 kg of charas.
Kolambekar, who works at a tile showroom and is a part-time bhajan singer, reportedly acquired the drugs from Himachal and was intending to transport them to Mumbai.
Authorities noted he has been a habitual consumer of charas for the past two decades and also supplied it to friends within his bhajan group.
During interrogations, the suspects indicated a rising demand for charas in Delhi-NCR and Mumbai during the festive season.
The police traced the contraband back to suppliers in the upper forest regions of Kullu, allegedly cultivated by Nepalese groups.
“Ongoing investigations into both cases aim to identify additional suppliers and recipients of the contraband,” stated DCP Sanjeev Kumar Yadav.
