New Delhi, July 22 (NationPress) In an impressive operation against cybercrime, the Delhi Police have dismantled a work-from-home job fraud syndicate and apprehended four suspects accused of defrauding a man of Rs 17.49 lakh through an elaborate online scam involving cryptocurrency.
The Cyber Police Station of South West Delhi intervened after the victim, a resident of Vasant Kunj, lodged a complaint.
The South West District Police revealed that the fraudsters attracted naive individuals via Telegram, presenting seemingly credible part-time online positions, such as reviewing websites for minor payments.
“After completing a few preliminary tasks, the victim was instructed to engage in a prepaid task related to the trading of Bitcoin. Convinced that he would reap substantial profits, the victim continued to deposit additional funds under the illusion of cashing out his earnings,” the police stated in an official release.
The complainant filed an online report on May 27, detailing that the initial contact from the fraudsters occurred on May 23. What started as a simple task for Rs 50 per review escalated into a more extensive investment scheme.
The victim was coerced into depositing progressively larger sums with false assurances of unlocking or redeeming his earnings. Ultimately, he was swindled out of Rs 17.49 lakh.
Following an initial investigation, a case was registered, and a special investigation team led by Sub-Inspector Opendar and overseen by ACP Vijay Kumar tracked the flow of funds and employed technical surveillance to expose the fraud network.
Analysis of the financial trail indicated that Rs 5 lakh was transferred from the victim’s account to one held at Kotak Mahindra Bank in the name of one of the accused. CCTV footage corroborated the presence of the accused and associates during the withdrawal.
The investigation spanned multiple locations across Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, including Lucknow, Agra, Bhopal, and Shivpuri.
After coordinated raids, four suspects were detained. These individuals were allegedly responsible for operating mule accounts and laundering funds through various layers, eventually converting the proceeds into cryptocurrency, specifically USDT, to evade detection by banks and law enforcement.
Authorities seized four smartphones and SIM cards used to perpetrate the fraud. The gang reportedly employed digital platforms and complex money laundering tactics to complicate tracing.
Further investigations are ongoing to identify additional members of the syndicate and discover other potential victims.
