New Delhi, April 22 (NationPress) The Vice Chairman of the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), Kuljeet Singh Chahal, announced on Tuesday a comprehensive plan for monsoon afforestation aimed at planting 2,039 trees and 4.82 lakh shrubs.

The NDMC's ambitious green initiative is set to commence in the first week of July, according to Chahal.

"Nurture a plant as you would your child. One day, as it matures into a tree, it will provide for you like a mother," Chahal stated, echoing the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a sustainable and eco-conscious India.

Chahal also emphasized the success of last year's initiative, 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam', during which the NDMC successfully planted 11,096 trees along with 13 lakh shrubs.

New targets for 2025 have been established following a detailed survey to pinpoint regions in need of increased greenery or gap plantation, he explained.

The plantation efforts will focus on key roads, parks, and community spaces such as Akbar Road, Shankar Road, and Sardar Patel Marg.

Significant green spaces, including Nehru Park, Lodhi Garden, Sanjay Jheel, and Talkatora Garden, will also be included in this initiative.

This year, ten species of trees have been designated for planting, such as Imli, Jamun, Pipal, Bargad, Champa, Bamboo, Neem, and Ashoka.

Additionally, 10 varieties of ornamental and native shrubs will be introduced to elevate landscape diversity and appeal, including Chandni, Hemalia, Calendula, Tikona, and Maurya.

Chahal noted that the NDMC oversees 1,450 acres of green spaces within its 42.7 square km jurisdiction.

This includes six major parks—Central Park, Lodhi Garden, Talkatora Garden, Nehru Park, and Sanjay Jheel—along with 122 colony parks, six nurseries, 981 parks maintained by the Central Public Works Department, 52 school greens, 51 roundabouts, 14 market gardens, and nearly 15,000 avenue trees.

Despite occupying only three percent of Delhi's total land area, the NDMC contributes 64.5 percent to the city’s overall green cover, highlighting its dedication to urban ecological development.

Chahal also mentioned that beyond planting trees and shrubs, special efforts will be made to enhance and restore green strips along major roads such as Madhu Limaye Marg, Satya Marg, San Martin Marg, Simon Bolivar Marg, Mandir Marg, Niti Marg, and the C-Hexagon.

Areas with gaps and brown patches will be filled with appropriate plantations to enhance both visual and ecological quality during the monsoon season.
