Key Takeaways
Moscow, Feb 3 (NationPress) Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated on Tuesday that Moscow has yet to receive any communication from New Delhi regarding a halt in Russian oil supplies.
"We haven't received any statements from Delhi on this issue thus far," quoted TASS, Russia's state-run news agency, during a routine media briefing while addressing a query about India's stance on Russian oil.
The diplomat mentioned that the Kremlin is keeping a close eye on US President Donald Trump's comments, particularly regarding India and oil.
"We are indeed monitoring all developments closely," noted Peskov. "We are paying special attention to President Trump's remarks; we are diligently recording and analyzing them."
"We value the bilateral relations between America and India," Peskov continued. "We place equal importance on nurturing our advanced strategic partnership with India. This is critically important to us, and we aim to enhance our bilateral relations in every conceivable way, which is precisely what we are doing," said Peskov, who serves as Press Secretary to President Vladimir Putin, as reported by TASS.
On Monday, the White House announced the removal of a 25 percent tariff associated with Russian oil purchases, which aligns with India's commitment to cease buying crude from Russia.
"As part of India's agreement to halt Russian oil purchases, the 25 percent tariff linked to Russian oil will be eliminated," a White House official informed IANS after President Trump stated, following a call with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, that the two nations had reached a trade agreement.
In a detailed post on Truth Social, Trump declared that this agreement would instantly reduce the US reciprocal tariff on Indian goods from 25 percent to 18 percent, signaling a significant alteration in bilateral trade relations tied to energy cooperation and broader geopolitical ambitions.
Trump noted that the two leaders discussed numerous topics, including trade and resolving the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. He asserted that PM Modi agreed to cease Russian oil purchases and increase imports from the United States and potentially from Venezuela.
Prime Minister Modi, in his post on X, expressed his delight that 'Made in India' products would now enjoy a reduced tariff of 18 percent.
"When two major economies and the world’s largest democracies collaborate, it serves our citizens and opens up vast opportunities for mutually beneficial cooperation," stated PM Modi.
A senior administration official, speaking on condition of anonymity, informed IANS that the 25 percent additional tariff was directly linked to India’s purchases of Russian oil and will now be lifted following New Delhi’s commitment to cease such imports.
Since the onset of the conflict in Ukraine, the United States has urged allies and partners to reduce or eliminate Russian energy purchases, arguing that oil revenues contribute to financing Moscow’s military operations.
