Kolkata, Sep 7 (NationPress) Senior Congress figure and former Union Minister of State, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, reached out to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Sunday, urging the inclusion of toilet facilities in nine EMU–MEMU trains that operate between Sealdah in Kolkata and Lalgola in Murshidabad district.
The ex-Berhampore MP described the lack of such essential amenities as "inhuman" and called for immediate action to address the needs of lakhs of daily commuters, particularly from underdeveloped areas like Murshidabad.
In his correspondence, Chowdhury highlighted the significant inconveniences faced by railway passengers in the Sealdah division, who are deprived of basic restroom facilities during their journeys on local trains including Sealdah-Lalgola, Kolkata-Lalgola, and Ranaghat-Lalgola, which span a distance of 250 kilometers.
He emphasized that Murshidabad is acknowledged as one of the nation’s backward districts, where the general populace routinely utilizes those nine local trains, including EMU or MEMU, without any toilet facilities, leaving them to ponder how to address their natural needs.
In a civil society like India, where the government promotes and conducts awareness campaigns for Swachh Bharat, he questioned whether it is not a grievous act of inhumanity by the railway organization to neglect the basic amenities that passengers rightfully deserve as they utilize these services.
Chowdhury concluded by stating, "I believe you are a compassionate Minister who can understand the pressing issues faced by those lakhs of passengers and implement scientific solutions that cater to the needs of railway travelers."
The Kolkata-Sealdah-Lalgola line is a vital railway corridor connecting Sealdah station to Lalgola, traversing multiple intermediate stations along the Sealdah Main Line. Both passenger and express trains run on this route, which is significant as it forms a long trunk line within the Kolkata Suburban Railway network, providing essential connectivity to Lalgola and nearby areas.
