Kolkata, Aug 11 (NationPress) A new political showdown has emerged between the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) regarding the potential renaming of Kolkata’s historic Sealdah Railway Station.
The Trinamool Congress advocates for renaming the Sealdah station in honor of Swami Vivekananda, while the West Bengal unit of the BJP pushes for it to be named after Syama Prasad Mukherjee.
Both parties present their own arguments. Dr. Sukanta Majumdar, former state president of the BJP and Union Minister of State, claims that Sealdah station was overlooked as a primary transit hub for Hindu refugees during the partition of undivided India.
“The individual responsible for safeguarding the welfare of these Hindu refugees was Syama Prasad Mukherjee. Therefore, in tribute to him and acknowledging the importance of Sealdah station for refugee transit, it should bear his name,” Majumdar stated.
Conversely, Kunal Ghosh, state general secretary of the Trinamool Congress, dismisses Majumdar’s reasoning. He points out that there is already a port in West Bengal named after Syama Prasad Mukherjee, making an additional naming unnecessary.
“In fact, Sealdah has a significant connection to Swami Vivekananda. After delivering his famous speech at a religious conference in Chicago, he arrived at Sealdah station. Thus, there is a genuine link between him and the station, warranting the renaming after him,” Ghosh argued.
However, Majumdar acknowledged the challenges associated with renaming Sealdah station after Syama Prasad Mukhopadhyay, as any change in a railway station's name requires the approval of the respective state government.
“The name change will proceed following the state government's recommendation. Therefore, I urge Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to propose renaming the station after Syama Prasad Mukherjee,” Majumdar concluded.
