Kolkata, Sep 28 (NationPress) A fierce political showdown has erupted over the stringent police measures surrounding the Durga Puja pandal inaugurated by Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Kolkata.
BJP leader Sajal Ghosh has raised questions about the conduct of Kolkata Police regarding the Durga Puja at Santosh Mitra Square in central Kolkata. He has leveled multiple accusations against the police, ranging from erecting barricades to issuing letters to the light and sound company engaged at the puja venue.
On Sunday morning, Kolkata Police firmly rejected Ghosh's claims, stating that there would be no compromise on public safety.
Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma stated, "Crowd management is essential at all the mandaps to handle the influx of visitors. There can be no compromise on public safety. This is being done to ensure that the crowd is well managed."
The police chief's remarks came after a BJP Councillor from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation expressed fears that the Santosh Mitra Square puja might face a halt due to police actions. On Saturday, the police issued a notice to the company responsible for the light and sound show at the Santosh Mitra Square puja, which was inaugurated by Amit Shah on Friday.
According to the police, they have requested various documents from the company, including its license, agreements with the puja organizers, GST documents, and sound limiter certifications. This has ignited a new controversy regarding the Durga Puja at the prominent Santosh Mitra Square, overseen by BJP leader Sajal Ghosh.
Moreover, the police demanded a permission letter from the puja committee for the organization of the light and sound show at the pavilion. It has also been reported that the police notice cites directives from the Calcutta High Court and the Pollution Control Board.
Sajal Ghosh has accused the Trinamool Congress government of harboring a vendetta against his puja pandal, which showcases the achievements of the Central government and was inaugurated by Amit Shah.
Earlier on Saturday, Ghosh alleged that Kolkata Police is attempting to hinder visitor turnout at the pavilion.
Ghosh expressed on his social media, "The plan to halt the puja is in motion. Public sentiment is the only solution."
The BJP leader contended that there is a conspiracy to obstruct the puja at Santosh Mitra Square. He claimed that the police had cordoned off the entire Sealdah station area deliberately, preventing visitors from accessing the puja pavilion and obstructing vehicle entry. He asserted that these actions are intended to dissuade visitors and force them to take alternate routes.
This year, the puja committee has introduced 'Operation Sindoor' as its theme, which has received public acclaim. According to Ghosh, it reflects the ruling Trinamool Congress's vendetta to prevent people from attending his puja pandal, as it underscores the Central government's successes in combating cross-border terrorism and responding to Pakistan through Operation Sindoor.
The esteemed Durga Puja committee previously adopted the Ram Mandir theme for the festival in 2023. The Union Home Minister inaugurated that year's puja and praised Ghosh's effort in constructing the puja mandap as a replica of the temple in Ayodhya.
Responding to the latest developments, Trinamool Congress state general secretary Kunal Ghosh remarked, "The police will ensure crowd management for public safety. The administration is doing everything possible for this. Sajal Ghosh is politicizing every issue."
