Kolkata, May 27 (NationPress) The West Bengal health department finds itself embroiled in controversy once again, as Debasish Halder, a prominent figure in the junior doctor's movement linked to the R.G. Kar rape and murder case, has been assigned a position as a senior resident doctor at a state-run hospital that officially lacks any vacancies for such roles.
The West Bengal Junior Doctor’s Front (WBJDF), an umbrella organization representing junior doctors across the state and leading the protests against the tragic incident, revealed that Halder, along with other protesting doctors, recently participated in a counselling session for senior resident postings at various state-run hospitals.
Typically, senior residents are mandated to begin their postings at rural hospitals, where they can select their preferred locations from a list of available vacancies.
Halder stated that he chose the Howrah District Hospital. However, upon the release of the posting list, it was discovered that he was the only individual assigned to a different location than he had selected, being allocated to a rural facility in Gazelle, Malda district in North West Bengal.
Furthermore, Halder claimed that the Gazelle hospital did not have any official openings, rendering its name absent from the list of hospitals with vacancies provided during the counselling session.
WBJDF has accused the state government of displaying blatant discrimination against Halder, suggesting that it reflects a vindictive attitude due to his prominent role in the protests surrounding the rape and murder case.
The organization plans to present a deputation to the state health department on Tuesday afternoon.
To recap, the body of a female doctor associated with R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata was discovered in a seminar room within the hospital premises in August of the previous year.
The sole perpetrator in the rape and murder case, Sanjay Roy, an ex-civic volunteer linked to Kolkata Police, is currently serving a life sentence after being convicted by a Kolkata trial court.
Nonetheless, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which oversaw the investigation, has approached the Calcutta High Court seeking the death penalty for Roy.
In the meantime, the victim's parents have petitioned the Calcutta High Court for a new CBI investigation to uncover any larger conspiracy surrounding the crime and to determine if Roy had accomplices in the heinous act of rape and murder.
