Srinagar, April 16 (NationPress) - In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, two individuals involved in drug peddling were apprehended in the Awantipora region of Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama district, according to police reports released on Thursday.
As part of the ongoing Nasha Mukt Jammu & Kashmir Abhiyaan, authorities from Awantipora Police apprehended the suspects during a routine naka checking at Arch Kanal, as stated in an official police announcement.
A police team led by Sub-Inspector Ishfaq Ahmad at the Toll Plaza Police Post, under the guidance of Inspector Ajaz Ahmad, the station house officer of Awantipora Police Station, stopped two men identified as Junaid Tariq, son of Tariq Ahmad Khan from Hariparigam, and Mubashir Ahmad Wani, son of Khazar Mohammad Wani from Panjpora, who were riding a motorcycle with the registration number JK03M-3900.
Upon searching them, police recovered approximately 1.258 kg of a banned substance, identified as charas/chura, from their possession.
Both suspects have been taken into custody, and their motorcycle has been confiscated. A case, FIR No. 88/2026, has been filed under appropriate sections of the NDPS Act at the Awantipora Police Station.
The investigation is currently ongoing. The Awantipora police reaffirm their commitment to the Nasha Mukt Jammu & Kashmir Abhiyan aimed at eliminating the drug problem and encourage public cooperation in this vital initiative, as stated in the release.
Police and various security forces are actively conducting rigorous operations against drug smuggling in J&K. Those under scrutiny include drug smugglers, peddlers, and participants in hawala money schemes, which are believed to finance terrorism in the region.
The military is responsible for preventing drug smuggling, as well as infiltration and drone activities originating from Pakistan, along the line of control (LoC), while the Border Security Force (BSF) manages the International Border.
