Strengthening Electoral Processes: ECI and State Commissions Unite at Roundtable
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, February 25 (NationPress) - The Election Commission of India (ECI) and various State Election Commissions have committed to enhancing their collaboration to fortify electoral processes and uphold national integrity. This decision came during the National Round Table Conference that took place at Bharat Mandapam in the capital.
The conference, organized by the ECI, concluded on Tuesday with participation from State Election Commissioners across 30 states.
Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar chaired the event alongside Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi.
This conference marked a significant revival after 27 years and received widespread commendation from the attending State Election Commissioners.
The ECI and state electoral bodies have resolved to conduct these round table discussions annually to foster better coordination among the entities responsible for managing elections at different levels.
During the conference, all participating State Election Commissions endorsed the National Declaration 2026, acknowledging that well-maintained and current electoral rolls are foundational to democracy, and that transparent, free, and efficient elections are critical for strengthening democratic institutions.
In the spirit of national interest, the ECI suggested the establishment of collaborative frameworks that are both practical and legally sound to enhance coordination in electoral processes nationwide.
Proposed measures include the sharing of the ECINET platform, Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), electoral rolls, and the training resources available at the India International Institute of Democracy and Election Management (IIIDEM). The declaration also highlighted the necessity to align the laws governing elections for Panchayats and Municipal Bodies with those that apply to Parliament and State Legislatures.
Additionally, the ECI invited State Election Commissions to engage in its international initiatives concerning election management.
Recommendations made during the conference will be reviewed by a joint team comprising legal and technical officers, led by Deputy Election Commissioners, with a state and Union Territory-specific action plan to be submitted within three months.
