How Can ECI Strengthen Electoral Processes at Tuesday's Roundtable Conference?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 22 (NationPress) In a groundbreaking initiative, the Election Commission of India (ECI) is set to convene a national roundtable conference on Tuesday focused on enhancing electoral processes and improving collaboration among various divisions of the electoral body, including the State Election Commissioners (SECs).
Taking place at the Bharat Mandapam, the all-day conference will feature in-depth discussions on the adoption of technology, the effective operation of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), and the management of Electoral Rolls. The agenda will also cover strategies to tackle unforeseen challenges.
This roundtable, which occurs after a gap of nearly thirty years, is particularly significant due to the upcoming Assembly elections and the ongoing political debate surrounding the revision of electoral rolls through the Special Intensive Revision (SIR). The last conference of this nature was held in 1999.
The main goal of the Round Table Conference is to enhance synergies between the ECI and SECs concerning electoral processes and logistics within their respective legal frameworks, as stated by the commission.
Additionally, the conference aims to serve as a platform for constructive dialogue, promoting the concept of cooperative federalism in electoral management.
The event will be presided over by Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and will see participation from Election Commissioners Dr. Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Dr. Vivek Joshi. State Election Commissioners from all states and union territories will attend, accompanied by their teams of advisors and experts. Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) from all 36 states and union territories will also be present.
Senior officials from the ECI will deliver presentations on critical technological and operational advancements, including the innovative ECINET digital platform and its potential to revolutionize electoral services.
The presentations will also focus on the reliability and safeguards of EVMs, as well as initiatives aimed at enhancing transparency within the electoral system.
Furthermore, a comparative analysis regarding the eligibility of electors across different states and union territories will be presented, referencing the Representation of the People Act, 1950, to ensure informed discussions on the legal frameworks governing Electoral Roll preparation.
