Are the Controversies Over Summoning Celebrities Baseless, as ECI Claims?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Jan 19 (NationPress) The Election Commission of India (ECI) stated on Monday that the controversies surrounding the summoning of celebrities and prominent individuals for hearings regarding claims and objections related to the draft voters' list are entirely unfounded.
Recently, Chandra Kumar Bose, the grandnephew of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, received a summons from the electoral body for a hearing.
This follows a similar notice issued to him.
Political uproar ensued, raising questions about the rationale behind summoning Netaji's grandnephew. In response, the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal provided clarification, explaining the reasons for Chandra Kumar Bose's summons.
"The claim is misleading. The enumeration form clearly indicates that the linkage column has been left blank. Consequently, he has been summoned for a hearing, just like other electors in similar situations, as per ECI's notification," the CEO's office stated.
Previously, political disputes arose regarding similar hearing notices sent to actor-turned-politician Dipak Adhikari (also known as Dev), former Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha MP Swapan Sadhan Bose (popularly referred to as Tutu Bose), his son Srinjoy Bose, a former Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha MP, and Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami.
"In all these instances, the hearing notices were issued because the enumeration forms explicitly showed that the linkage columns were left blank. In each case, the CEO's office had to clarify the situation. If the individuals concerned had inquired with the voters about the reasons behind the hearing notices, such controversies could have been avoided," sources from the CEO's office commented.
The deadline for submitting claims and objections regarding the draft voters' list is set to expire on Monday. However, the hearings will continue until February 7. After that, the full bench of the Commission will visit West Bengal, and shortly thereafter, the ECI is anticipated to announce the polling dates for the critical Assembly elections in West Bengal.
