Did ECI Dismiss TMC's Claims About Notices Issued to Former MPs?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Jan 13 (NationPress) The Election Commission of India (ECI) has on Tuesday dismissed the claims made by the Trinamool Congress (TMC) alleging that two former Rajya Sabha members were summoned for hearings during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls without sufficient justification.
Earlier reports indicated that Swapan Sadhan Bose, a former TMC Rajya Sabha MP and ex-president of the Mohun Bagan football club, along with his son Srinjoy Bose, who is also a former Rajya Sabha MP and the club’s general secretary, had received notices to appear for hearings concerning claims and objections related to the draft voting list.
The TMC accused the Election Commission of intentionally targeting the two leaders due to their affiliation with the ruling party in West Bengal.
However, later on Tuesday, the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal issued a statement refuting these allegations. It clarified that the notices were sent because the enumeration forms submitted by both individuals had blank linkage columns.
“The allegation is misleading. The enumeration forms clearly indicate that the linkage column is unfilled. Shri Swapan Sadhan Bose, along with his family, has been summoned for a hearing like other electors in similar situations, in accordance with ECI regulations. Given that Shri Bose is unwell, he has the option for a hearing at his residence,” the statement explained.
This clarification was also shared on the official social media account of the CEO of West Bengal.
Recently, several notable figures from West Bengal have been summoned as part of the SIR process, including Nobel laureate Amartya Sen, renowned poet Joy Goswami, and Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami. With the notice issued to Tutu Bose, another prominent member of the state's sports community has been added to this list.
Srinjoy Bose also mentioned in a social media post that the family is scheduled for a hearing on January 19.
