Trinamool Congress Accuses Election Commission of Bias Ahead of West Bengal Elections
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, April 14 (NationPress) The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has leveled accusations against the Election Commission of India (ECI) for allegedly issuing targeted directives to all Flying Surveillance Teams (FSTs) assigned for the upcoming two-phase West Bengal Assembly elections. These teams have been instructed to scrutinize the vehicles of all TMC leaders and their immediate family members, with the notable exception of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
This vehicle inspection also encompasses Trinamool's General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee and his spouse Rujira Narula Banerjee.
On Tuesday, the Trinamool released a screenshot purportedly showing a WhatsApp message from the ECI, which allegedly directed FSTs to check the vehicles of all TMC officials, excluding the Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee.
The message indicated that the Election Commission is concerned about the potential transportation of illicit funds disguised as donations for medical and blood donation camps, thus prompting stricter vehicle checks involving TMC leaders, state cabinet members, and their relatives.
However, IANS could not confirm the authenticity of the WhatsApp communication shared by the TMC with certain media outlets. As of the time of this report, neither the ECI nor the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) for West Bengal had issued a response.
The Trinamool Congress contends that these ECI directives are part of a calculated effort to further the political vendetta allegedly perpetrated by the BJP.
Nevertheless, doubts have been raised regarding the validity of the WhatsApp screenshot provided by the Trinamool Congress. Notably, the name of the Trinamool Congress General Secretary appears to be misspelled in different parts of the message—once as “Avisek” and another as “Abhishek.”
Moreover, the absence of a surname in the WhatsApp message ignites speculation about whether it indeed referred to the TMC General Secretary.
