Abhishek Banerjee Unveils SC and ST Initiatives Ahead of Bengal Elections
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 2 (NationPress) - In a significant move ahead of the West Bengal Assembly elections, Trinamool Congress General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee unveiled targeted initiatives to engage with the Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs) in the region.
The Trinamool Congress plans to launch a dedicated campaign across 84 Assembly constituencies primarily populated by SC and ST communities.
For this initiative, the party will deploy special vehicles, each carrying three to four campaigners to facilitate door-to-door outreach.
This announcement was made during the 'Scheduled Castes Dialogue' meeting held at Nazrul Mancha in Kolkata.
During his speech, Banerjee criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), accusing it of systematic oppression against SCs and STs nationwide.
Referencing a report from the National Crime Bureau, he stated, "States governed by the BJP, such as Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh, rank at the top for atrocities against Scheduled Castes. The BJP intends to alter the Constitution established by Baba Saheb Ambedkar and revoke the rights of SCs."
On a contrasting note, the Trinamool Congress administration in West Bengal has initiated various development programs, including Lakshmir Bhandar, aimed at uplifting SC and ST women.
Banerjee highlighted that the monthly stipend under the Lakshmir Bhandar scheme has risen from Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,700 over five years.
Informing party leaders and activists about the new campaign, he urged, "We must engage with the community directly, explaining that voting for the BJP equates to inviting danger. We need to showcase the achievements of the Trinamool government led by Mamata Banerjee for SCs and STs."
Additionally, Banerjee cautioned party members, insisting, "Stay vigilant. If you're sure of securing 100 votes at a polling station, aim for 200. If the campaign vehicle is delayed, do not hesitate to reach out to the people yourselves."
He also mocked the BJP's 'Parivartan Rath Yatra', saying: "Traditionally, Rath Yatras occur during Asharh-Shravan. Why is the BJP conducting theirs in February? Their Rath Yatra is merely a vehicle for deceit. We must ensure that after the Assembly polls, BJP leaders return to Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi in that chariot, limiting their seats in West Bengal to below 50."
On March 1, the BJP commenced its Parivartan Yatra throughout the state, urging the populace to remove the Trinamool Congress from power in the upcoming Assembly elections.
Five Parivartan Yatras will unfold from five districts today, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurating one from the South 24 Parganas district.
