BJP and JD(U) Slam CM Banerjee Over Election Commission Remarks
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 20 (NationPress) Leaders from the BJP and JD(U) sharply criticized West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for her remarks calling into question the Election Commission’s impartiality in a recent social media post.
On Thursday, CM Banerjee accused the poll authority of “summarily and arbitrarily” dismissing “over 50 senior officials” in the lead-up to the Assembly elections at the end of April.
BJP leader Dilip Ghosh stated, "She has no authority to voice opinions or challenge any actions. Everyone is aware of her governance over the past 15 years and her treatment of officials. Now that she’s losing grip, her letters are meaningless."
Expressing confidence in the Election Commission, he asserted, "They have effectively overseen elections in Bihar, and similar results are expected here, leading to a change."
Ghosh accused the Trinamool Congress of employing tactics to intimidate voters through police and local thugs, as well as distributing funds to secure electoral victories.
"This strategy is failing. The transfers have disrupted the police personnel loyal to Trinamool, making it hard for the party to operate independently," he said.
JD(U) spokesperson Rajeev Ranjan Prasad commented to IANS, "This is standard procedure. The Election Commission frequently issues such orders in states approaching elections. With Mamata Banerjee’s popularity waning, she is attacking the EC to divert public attention."
Defending the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, JD(U) leader Neeraj Kumar remarked, "SIR has also been implemented in Bihar. Should the voters' list include the name of a deceased individual or someone who is not a citizen? Should there be duplicate entries?"
He further challenged IANS, "Mamata Banerjee should clarify if her party has Booth Level Agents (BLAs) at polling stations. If so, the names and contact details of these agents should be made public."
Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party MP Rajeev Kumar Rai defended CM Banerjee, alleging that the Election Commission is being exploited as a tool, leading to unprecedented abductions across the democratic landscape.
On Thursday, Chief Minister Banerjee expressed on her ‘X’ handle that the targeted actions of the Election Commission against Bengal were unprecedented and deeply concerning.
She pointed out that prior to the official election notification, over 50 senior officials, including the Chief Secretary, Home Secretary, DGP, ADGs, IGs, DIGs, District Magistrates, and Superintendents of Police, were dismissed, labeling this as political interference rather than administrative action.
She added that the systematic politicization of institutions meant to be impartial constitutes a direct assault on the Indian Constitution.
She highlighted that at a time when a problematic SIR process is underway and over 200 lives have been lost, the Commission's behavior shows bias and submission to political interests, endangering the people of Bengal.
