Mamata Banerjee Criticizes ECI for Political Interference in West Bengal
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 19 (NationPress) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee fiercely criticized the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Thursday for its recent actions involving the transfer of bureaucrats and police personnel within the state. She highlighted that numerous officials have been sent on deputation to serve as general and police observers in other states, a practice that has intensified daily since the model code of conduct was enacted following the announcement of polling dates for four states and one union territory.
The Chief Minister alleged that the ECI has unfairly targeted West Bengal, labeling this trend as particularly concerning, especially considering it has occurred even before the formal election notification.
“The way the Election Commission has chosen to single out Bengal is unprecedented and deeply troubling. Even prior to the official election announcement, over 50 senior officials—including the Chief Secretary, Home Secretary, DGP, and various other high-ranking officers—have been unceremoniously and unjustly removed. This is not merely an administrative move; it represents the highest degree of political interference,” she stated in a post on her official social media account X.
She further articulated that the ongoing situation is indicative of a systematic politicization of institutions that should uphold neutrality, which she views as a direct violation of the Indian Constitution.
“In a time when a flawed SIR process is unfolding, resulting in over 200 lives lost, the Commission's behavior exhibits clear bias and an alarming surrender to political agendas, thereby endangering the citizens of Bengal,” she asserted.
The Chief Minister pointed out that the extensive transfers and deputations are not coincidental but rather a calculated effort to exert control over West Bengal through coercion and manipulation of institutions.
“What we are experiencing is akin to an undeclared emergency and a version of president's rule driven by political vengeance, rather than democratic values. Unable to earn the trust of Bengal's populace, the BJP is resorting to intimidation, coercion, and the misuse of institutional power,” she added.
In her statement, she expressed unwavering support for the bureaucrats and police officers affected by these transfers, stating that they are being unfairly targeted for their dedication and integrity in serving the state.
“Bengal has a history of standing firm against intimidation, and it will continue to do so. Bengal will resist, fight back, and ultimately thwart any attempts to impose a divisive and destructive agenda on its territory,” she concluded.
